Patrick Dempsey has put together a race/run to help benefit the Dempsey Cancer Center for Hope and Healing. Let’s face it, he did a great thing by having this center built, but it takes money to upkeep!!!

We need to do our part and help in the cause. Most of us have been touched by cancer in some way. The center helps those with Cancer with different types of treatment, support and education. Having gone through taking care of my mother with cancer, I understand all too well where this support and help is needed.

My story:

For me it was my mother who died of Melanoma Cancer in 2004. She died of exactly what Izzy is sick with on the show Grey’s Anatomy. Cancer robbed me of my mother at the young age of 53 (her age not mine). It caused my children to lose their grandmother and I am going to do my part to help those who are going through what we went through.

In September 2003, my mother Janet Kathleen Davidson Mahany told my older sister first and then me and my other sister, about a melanoma that had formed on her back right calf.

Immediately, me being me, had decided that it was probably a non-cancerous tumor. I had just seen a show where this lady had this big tumor but it wasn’t cancer and she just hadn’t ever had it checked, etc. I think it was on the Discovery Channel. 100lb tumor or something like this. But my mother assured me that she already knew what it was.

By December she could not walk, was getting 2 units of blood every other week and living on morphine.

On that fateful day in January, my husband took a call at 2 am from my mothers husband that said my mother had gone into the hospital for kidney failure.  By 3pm the next day she was gone. With her family at her side, my mother was no longer in pain, but she was no longer with us either.

An experience I will never forget nor ever want to repeat and want to do my part to help others who are dealing with the same or similar experience.

I am doing this run in honor of my mother. And I would appreciate your help supporting the cause in her name. I will be running since my husband explained to me that I haven’t ridden a bike in 15 years or more. I would love to go, meet my favorite actor and help a great cause in honor of my mother.
